The Compensation Fund is inviting dependents of COID beneficiaries with a permanent disablement, unemployed COID beneficiaries with a permanent disablement (PWD) due to occupational injuries/diseases, and dependents of employees who were fatally injured to apply for the Compensation Fund External Bursary opportunities. The bursary is available for the entire 2024 year, however, interested students are urged to submit their applications for the 2024 academic year by 31st of March 2024, at the latest.

About the Compensation Fund Bursary

The Compensation Fund bursary is intended for people who experience difficulties as a result of a disablement or income loss, it seeks to provide possibilities for them to fully engage in society by assisting with their education. The bursary gives recipients the financial means to pursue education, enabling them to acquire credentials and skills that will improve their employability and independence after being permanently disabled from an occupational injury.

 

FIELD OF STUDY

The bursary programme is open to students who want to pursue or are pursuing an undergraduate qualification in the following fields: 

Recommended priority qualifications for dependents of COID beneficiaries with a permanent disablement NB: list is NOT restrictive or exhaustive:

  • Health and clinical science
  • Accounting Science
  • Economic Science
  • Actuarial Science
  • Financial Mathematics
  • Mathematical Science/ Statistics
  • Data Science
  • Risk Management and Forensic Science
  • Information Technology / Computer Science (Specializing with informatics/ system development /artificial intelligence/machine learning/ Data science & analytics/ data engineering/ Cyber security/ Cloud Computing/ Internet of Things (IoT)/ Quantum Computing/ robotics/ Software engineering/ Computer networks), 
  • Engineering (including Chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, mechatronics, design and development, production and process)
  • Architecture 
  • Aeronautical Engineering/ Aerospace Control /Aviation
  • Agriculture
  • Culinary
  • Graphic Design/ Digital Marketing/ Brand Communication or Management/ Digital design/ Film and Production/Animation
  • Environmental Health, Teaching ( Mathematics, Science, Information Communications Technology and Early Childhood Development)
  • Apprenticeship Qualification 

Unemployed COID beneficiaries with Permanent Disablement are open to studying the qualification of their choice to increase their chances of reintegration into the labour market. This is also applicable to dependents of fatally injured workers; however, they are encouraged to consider the listed priority qualifications.

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COMPENSATION FUND BURSARY

To qualify for the Compensation Fund Bursary you must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must have been accepted or studying at a recognised TVET College, CET College or Higher Education Institution 
  • Must be enrolled or studying full time (only under exceptional circumstances students with disabilities will be permitted  to study part-time)
  • Must be unemployed
  • Dependants of COID beneficiaries with a Permanent disablement and dependants of Fatally injured employees must be between 17 and 35 years of age
  • COID beneficiaries with a permanent Disablement Must be within the working age
  • Must have acquired permanent disablement due to occupational injuries /diseases OR dependants Of COID persons with disabilities OR dependants of fatally injured workers 

 

COMPENSATION FUND BURSARY COVERS:

  • Tuition
  • Prescribed study materials 
  • Monthly Stipend
  • Accommodation 

 

COMPENSATION FUND BURSARY REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:

  • Fully completed application form
  • Proof of Residence 
  • Claim number 
  • Certified copies of Identity document of the applicant
  • Certified copies of parent(s) or guardians’ Identity document(COID Persons with Disabilities)
  • Certified copies of death certificate (COID Persons with Disabilities)
  • Grade 12 June results/ highest school grade or qualification 
  • Proof of acceptance or registration from public Post School Education and Training (PSET) 
  • Proof of unemployment letter from Department of Employment and Labour / or Affidavit  Certification and verification of physical disability by a Health Care Professional or Disability Support Office / WCL forms (Final medical report)

 

How to apply for the Compensation Fund Bursary - 2024

To apply for the Compensation Fund External Bursary interested students can download the application form HERE or they can visit their nearest Provincial Labour Centre to get the application form.
