Missed the deadline to register to rewrite your NSC/SC exams? don't panic! The Department of Basic Education has extended the registration period, candidates can now register until 20 February 2024. 

 

Second Chance Matric Programme - 2024

The Second Chance matric program is aimed at those who have failed their matric exams or want to improve their results. To be eligible to write the exams, you must have attempted matric exams before and not achieved a pass in one or more of your subjects. You will also need to have attended classes at a registered institution/school during the academic year.

 

Second Chance Matric Programme Requirements

Requirements for the Senior Certificate

The following candidates will qualify for admission to the Senior Certificate:

  • Adult learners who are 21 years and older who have:
    • a General Education and Training Certificate (GETC); or
    • a Grade 9 school report (or the old standard seven). stating that they have passed Grade 9 or Standard 7; or
    • a recognised equivalent qualification obtained at NQF Level which requires two official languages.
  • Adult learners who are 21 years and older with an incomplete Senior Certificate qualification.
  • Adult learners who are 21 years and older with an incomplete National Senior Certificate
  • Only in exceptional cases, out of school youth, who are 18-21 years old and who could not complete their school education due to circumstances beyond their control, as verified by the Head of Department in the Provincial Education Department.
  • Adult candidates who are 21 years and older with an incomplete NSC may choose to complete the NSC, or convert to the Senior Certificate.  Should the candidate choose to convert to the Senior Certificate, they may not revert to the NSC and attempt to complete the NSC qualification.
  • Adult candidates who have already obtained a qualification but wish to improve their results/status.

    

Requirements for the National Senior Certificate:

  • 2023 grade 12 learners
  • Anyone who wants to improve on their previous NSC results and who is still a NSC candidate (i.e. has not had their certificate changed to SC) may register as a part-time candidate for the NSC examinations.
  • Must be between the ages of 18 - 20

 

Second Chance Matric Programme Required Documents

The following documents are required when applying:

  • Completed registration form (If applying at the district)
  • Your certified ID or birth certificate copy
  • Your certified passport copy, if you are a foreign candidate 
  • Your certified statement of Results/ Grade 12 Certificate
  • School reports (this applies to learners who have passed grade 9, 10, or 11 and are 21 years old or older)
  • Repeater candidates must attach a copy of their previous highest qualification
  • If you have wrote any other Grade 12 or equivalent examination before you will need to supply the examination numbers for those exams.

 

How to register for the second chance matric programme

Registering for the second chance matric programme is easy. Candidates who want to rewrite Senior Certificate (SC) Examinations MUST register online. Candidates who want to rewrite National Senior Certificate (NSC) Examinations should STRICTLY register at their nearest Education District Office

NOTE: Online Registrations for National Senior Certificate (NSC) will not be accepted.

Once you have registered, you will need to attend classes and study hard to prepare for the exams. The Second Chance matric program provides support to students in the form of classes and study materials. Make sure you attend all classes and use the study materials to help you prepare.
