Missed the regular application deadline? Don't panic! Several South African universities are still accepting late applications for undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications for the 2024 academic year.

2024 Late Applications

What are late applications?

Submitting an application after the closing date is considered as a late application. University late applications open January annually after grade 12 learners receive their final grade 12 results and close on the 31st of March. Late applications are open to give learners who didn't apply a chance to submit their applications. Universities do not allow walk ins and all applications should be submitted online.

Here's what you need to know about late applications:

  • Do your research. Before you submit your application, make sure that you check the available courses and the minimum requirements for the available courses. The truth is that, not all courses open for the late applications. Courses under the humanities get full very fast and it is not possible for them to open for late applications.
  • Not all Universities accept late applications. Some Universities have a strict deadline and any applications received after that date will be automatically rejected. These institutions include, University of Pretoria, Stellenbosch University, University of Witwatersrand and University of Cape Town.
  • Admission is not guaranteed: Even if a university accepts late applications, it doesn't mean you'll be accepted. The competition for late spots is tight, so you'll need to make sure that you exceed the minimum requirements to be admitted.

List of universities that are open for 2024 late applications:

University of South Africa (Closing Date: 28 February 2024)

Cape Peninsula University of Technology (Closing Date: 23 February 2024)

How to apply for late applications online

The process to apply for late applications online may vary depending on the institution you are applying to. However, there are some general steps that you can follow:

  1. Research: Find out which universities are open for late applications.
  2. Check available courses: The second step is to check the available courses because not all courses open during the late application period.
  3. Check requirements: Never make a mistake of applying without checking the minimum admission requirements.
  4. Apply Online: All late applications are submitted online. No walk ins are allowed.
  5. Submit your supporting documents: Most institutions will require you to submit supporting documents with your late application. This may include certified ID copy, certified Matric statement or certificate.
  6. Pay the application fee. There is usually a fee associated with submitting a late application. Be sure to pay the fee before the deadline.

Once you have completed all of the steps above, the institution will review your application and notify you of their decision. Keep track of  your application status online or via email.

To conclude, while applying late is not ideal, there's a slim chance of securing admission if you're fortunate but remember luck alone does not work when it comes to submitting university applications. You need to apply early and exceed minimum requirements to have a high chance of being accepted for late applications.
