What is WorldSkills South Africa?
WorldSkills South Africa is a biennial national competition that celebrates and promotes vocational and technical excellence among young South Africans. The 2026 National Competition: Dates, Venue & Participants
Mark your calendars! The sixth WorldSkills South Africa National Competition, Conference, and Career Festival will take place from March 8 to March 12, 2026. This exciting event will be hosted at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Durban International Convention Centre in KwaZulu Natal Province.
Over 200 talented students are expected to participate, representing TVET Colleges, universities of technology, private training providers, and even technical high schools. It's a fantastic opportunity to compete, network, and learn from the best in your chosen field.

Are You Eligible to Compete?
WorldSkills South Africa welcomes a wide range of young talent. To be eligible, you generally need to be:
- A student in an apprenticeship or learnership related to your chosen skill.
- A student pursuing a qualification in the related skill at a University, TVET College, Private Skills Development Provider, CET College, or a Technical High School.
- A candidate with an accredited qualification in the related skill.
For most skill categories, you must not turn 23 years old in 2026. However, for specific skills like Aircraft Maintenance, Mechatronics, and Water Technology, the age limit is extended: you must not turn 26 years old in 2026. Please note that no information regarding APS scores or specific fees for competition entry was found.
Your Journey to National & International Recognition
The pathway to the WorldSkills South Africa National Competition and potentially the international stage involves several exciting steps:
- Online Application: Your journey typically begins with an online application where you provide personal details, academic information, and contacts for your teachers or supervisors. Remember to download and complete an indemnity form before applying.
- Pre-screening Evaluation: Applications are reviewed for age compliance, relevant theoretical knowledge, and teacher qualifications. Successful candidates are then assigned to a competition group or college.
- Local Heats: Competitions are conducted at the college level. To advance, you'll need to achieve at least 63% of WorldSkills International's 800 points. Typically, the top two candidates per skill move forward.
- Provincial WorldSkills Competitions: Top candidates from local heats represent their institutions. Modified test projects, based on previous WorldSkills International competitions, are used. Here, you'll need to achieve at least 70% of WorldSkills International's 800 points. A maximum of five candidates per trade per province are selected.
- National Competitions: The top two winners in each trade or skill from the provincial level proceed to the National Competitions. These national champions then undergo rigorous nine-month training to prepare for the ultimate challenge: the WorldSkills International Competition.
Important Deadlines: For the 2026 WorldSkills South Africa cycle, applications for the heats closed on November 30, 2024, and provincial competitions occurred in 2025. This means the initial application phases for this specific 2026 National Competition have already progressed significantly.
