Are you looking for a stepping stone into university studies at the University of the Free State (UFS)? Higher Certificate courses at UFS provide a valuable opportunity for students who do not meet the minimum requirements for a degree or diploma but still want to pursue higher education.

These courses are designed to help you build the academic foundation and confidence you need to transition into mainstream university studies.

What Is a Higher Certificate?

A Higher Certificate is a one-year qualification offered at NQF Level 5. It is aimed at students who have completed their National Senior Certificate (NSC) but did not qualify for direct entry into diploma or degree programmes. Upon successful completion, students may be eligible to apply for specific diploma or degree programmes.

Higher Certificates are ideal for students who:

  • Did not meet admission requirements for degree or diploma programmes
  • Need academic support before entering university-level studies
  • Want to explore their interests before committing to a full 3- or 4-year programme

Why Choose UFS for Your Higher Certificate in 2026?

The University of the Free State (UFS) is one of South Africa’s oldest and most reputable institutions. It offers a supportive learning environment, excellent academic resources, and a strong commitment to student success.

UFS understands that not all students follow the same path to university and has developed Access Programmes that allow students to transition successfully into higher education through Higher Certificates.

The university offers these courses through its University Access Programme (UAP), which is coordinated by the South Campus in Bloemfontein and satellite locations.
