Letaba TVET College has officially announced the opening of applications for the 2025 ARPL MERSETA 15 Electrician Programme, a three-month training initiative funded by the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (MERSETA).

This opportunity is designed to equip candidates with vital skills in the electrical field, while also recognising prior learning and work experience. With only 15 available posts, the programme is set to attract significant interest, especially from those with relevant industry experience.

About the Programme

The ARPL (Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning) MERSETA Electrician Programme provides a structured pathway for individuals who already have practical experience in electrical engineering but may not yet be formally qualified.

Funded by MERSETA, this short-term programme runs over three months and is intended to help participants secure formal recognition of their competencies and enhance employability.

Letaba TVET College, located in Tzaneen, Limpopo Province, has long been known for its commitment to producing highly skilled artisans and professionals across various trades.

By partnering with MERSETA, the college ensures that learners are not only trained to meet local industry needs but are also aligned with national skills development priorities.

Application Requirements

Candidates who wish to apply must meet the minimum requirements outlined by the college. These include:

  • A minimum of Grade 12 or an equivalent qualification.
  • At least three (3) years of relevant work experience in the field of Electrical Engineering.
  • Applicants are expected to submit a detailed Curriculum Vitae, certified copies of qualifications, an ID copy, and a service letter from their employer confirming relevant work experience.

NOTE: The service letter is particularly important as it verifies hands-on industry exposure, which is central to the ARPL system. This ensures that the programme selects candidates who already have practical knowledge but require formal assessment and recognition.

How to Apply

Letaba TVET College requires applicants to hand-delivered applications. Candidates must submit their documents to:

Letaba TVET College Central Office,

1 Claude Wheatley Street,
Tzaneen, 0850.

REFERENCE: LTC15/09/2025

TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING:

The college has made it clear that no email applications will be accepted. This emphasizes the importance of following instructions carefully to avoid disqualification.

Preference will be given to former Letaba TVET College students, further demonstrating the institution’s commitment to supporting its alumni network.

The closing date for applications is 19 September 2025, and any applications received after this date will not be considered. Candidates who have not been contacted within one month after the closing date should regard their applications as unsuccessful.

For enquiries, applicants may contact Sambo UD at 015 307 5440.

Conditions of the Programme

Successful applicants will be placed within the Limpopo Province, where they will complete the three-month duration of the programme.

However, there are several important conditions that applicants must keep in mind:

No Prior Learnership or Apprenticeship: Candidates must not have previously served in a learnership, skills programme, or apprenticeship. This is to ensure that the opportunity is fairly distributed to those who have not yet benefited from similar training initiatives.

Strict Deadline Compliance: Applications submitted after the closing date will not be accepted under any circumstances.

Encouragement of Inclusivity: People with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply, in line with South Africa’s broader commitment to inclusive education and employment practices.

Opportunities Provided by the Programme

The ARPL MERSETA 15 Electrician Programme is more than just a three-month training. It provides candidates with a gateway into formal recognition and career advancement. Below are some of the opportunities it creates:

Formal Recognition of Skills: Many individuals working in technical fields have years of experience but lack formal qualifications. This programme ensures that their skills are officially recognised, which can open doors to better employment opportunities.

Enhanced Employability: Having a formal qualification in Electrical Engineering increases a candidate’s chances of being employed in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and energy.

Stepping Stone to Further Education: For those who wish to further their studies, this programme can serve as a foundation for higher qualifications within TVET colleges or universities of technology.

Contribution to South Africa’s Skills Development: By training and certifying electricians, the programme contributes to addressing the country’s skills shortage in the technical and artisan fields.

Why the ARPL Initiative Matters

The Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) initiative is a national effort aimed at addressing skills gaps in South Africa. Many South Africans have learned trades informally or through workplace experience but are not officially qualified artisans. Without formal certification, their career growth is limited despite their practical expertise.

This initiative, supported by MERSETA and implemented through institutions like Letaba TVET College, helps bridge this gap. It allows experienced workers to undergo assessment and structured training, leading to recognition as qualified artisans.
