About NWU

North-West University (NWU) is a multi-campus South African university with three main campuses located in Potchefstroom, Mahikeng, and Vanderbijlpark. Formed in 2004 through the merger of Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, the University of North-West, and the Vaal Triangle Campus of Potchefstroom University, NWU has grown into one of the largest universities in South Africa by student enrolment. NWU offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across eight faculties, spanning the natural sciences, engineering, health sciences, humanities, law, education, theology, and economic and management sciences. The university is known for its strong research output and its commitment to community engagement and social transformation. The university operates in a multilingual environment. The Potchefstroom Campus uses Afrikaans as its primary language of instruction (with educational interpreting to English available), while the Mahikeng Campus is predominantly English-medium, and the Vanderbijlpark Campus offers instruction in both English and Afrikaans. Distance learning programmes are offered through NWU's dedicated distance education platform. NWU is accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and all its qualifications are registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) administered by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). The university actively participates in NSFAS funding to support eligible students.
