NWU 2026 Admission Requirements

Understanding admission requirements is crucial to securing a place at NWU. Below are the general entry criteria:

  • Minimum Requirements:
    • Obtain a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Independent Examinations Board (IEB), issued by Umalusi, which also indicates that you meet the requirements for a bachelor’s degree.
    • An NSC with at least 50% in any four NSC 20 credit subjects.
    • APS is calculated using six subjects, excluding Life Orientation.
    • Subject-specific requirements per faculty which include the language of learning and teaching at 50%

Note: Life Orientation and any subject with an achievement level of 1 are not considered in the APS calculation.

How to Calculate Your APS for NWU

An Admission Point Score (APS) is a system used by South African universities, including North-West University (NWU), to assess applicants' academic performance and determine eligibility for various programs. The APS is calculated by assigning points to each subject based on the final percentage achieved, with the best six subjects (excluding Life Orientation) contributing to the total score.

Calculating Your APS:

To calculate your APS, follow these steps:

1. Identify Your Best Six Subjects: Select the six subjects in which you achieved the highest marks, excluding Life Orientation.

2. Assign Points to Each Subject: Use the following scale to assign points based on your percentage:

NSC LevelPercentage (%)APS
890-100%8
780-89%7
670-79%6
560-69%5
450-59%4
340-49%3
230-39%2
10-29%1

3. Calculate the Total APS: Add the points of your best six subjects to obtain your total APS.

Example:

Consider the following subject percentages:

SubjectPercentage (%)Points
Setswana726
English776
History857
Mathematical Literacy827
Life Sciences695
Physical Sciences766

Total APS: 6 + 6 + 7 + 7 + 5 + 6 = 37

In this example, the total APS is 37.

Using NWU's APS Calculator:

To assist in calculating your APS, NWU provides an online APS calculator. This tool allows you to input your subject percentages and automatically computes your APS. Access the calculator here: https://studies.nwu.ac.za/studies/aps-calculator

Important Considerations:

  • Subject-Specific Requirements: Each faculty at NWU may have specific subject requirements and minimum APS scores for admission. It's essential to review the admission requirements for your chosen program to ensure you meet all criteria.
  • Minimum APS Requirements: Meeting the minimum APS requirement does not guarantee admission, as programs may be competitive. Aim for a higher APS to enhance your chances of acceptance.
  • Application Deadlines: Be aware of application deadlines and ensure all required documents are submitted on time. For detailed information on application dates and procedures, refer to NWU's official website.
