Embarking on your university journey is an exciting milestone, and for many aspiring University of Cape Town (UCT) students, understanding the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) is a key part of the application process. Commissioned by Higher Education South Africa (HESA), these assessments provide universities with valuable insights into your academic preparedness, complementing your National Senior Certificate (NSC) results.

Consider the NBTs as UCT's way of gauging your potential for success in higher education and identifying areas where you might need additional support. This comprehensive guide will demystify the NBTs, covering everything you need to know for your UCT application.

Who Needs to Write the UCT NBTs?

For undergraduate applicants normally resident in South Africa or attending a school within the country, writing the NBTs is a standard requirement for admission to UCT for 2025 and subsequent years.

A specific rule applies to the Faculty of Health Sciences: all applicants must write the NBTs, irrespective of their place of residence. Conversely, if your sights are set on the Faculty of Engineering & The Built Environment, please note that your NBT results will not be factored into your admission assessment.

Understanding the NBT Test Structure

The NBTs are comprised of two distinct tests: the Academic and Quantitative Literacy Test (AQL) and the Mathematics Test (MAT).

The AQL test is further divided into two sections: Academic Literacy (AL) and Quantitative Literacy (QL). All applicants to UCT faculties are required to complete the AQL test. The MAT test is mandatory for applicants pursuing programmes that involve mathematics-intensive coursework.

Both tests are presented in a multiple-choice format and are typically administered on the same day, with each test lasting for a duration of three hours.

How UCT Utilises Your NBT Results

UCT employs a holistic approach to admissions, considering your NBT results in conjunction with your NSC results and the Faculty Point Scoring (FPS) system. This comprehensive evaluation ensures a well-rounded assessment of your academic capabilities.

For applicants presenting International Baccalaureate (IB) qualifications, a 'Higher Intermediate' NBT score may be stipulated, alongside the fulfillment of specific point thresholds.

Beyond admission decisions, UCT also uses NBT results to identify students who could benefit from targeted academic support or placement into extended curriculum programmes, ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive.

NBT Registration, Fees, and Important Dates

To begin your NBT journey, you must first register. Ensure you have a valid South African ID book or passport (for international applicants) and a unique email address, as this will be your primary point of contact. It is essential to complete your NBT registration before submitting your application to UCT.

The fee for the AQL test is R195. Should you need to write both the AQL and MAT tests, the combined fee is R390.

Key Deadlines:

  • Faculty of Health Sciences: Aim to write your NBTs by 31 July of the year preceding your intended enrollment to be considered for a conditional offer.
  • General UCT Admissions: For most other programmes, your NBTs should be completed by 12 October of the preceding year.

Please allow approximately four weeks for your results to be transmitted to UCT after you have taken the test. We recommend registering for your test at least three weeks before your desired test date to ensure availability.

What Happens After You Write the NBTs?

Once you have completed the NBTs, the NBT Project will send your results directly to the institutions you have applied to. You do not need to submit your scores yourself, simplifying the process.

It's important to know that your NBT results remain valid for three years from the date of your test. Should you miss a scheduled test date, you will need to re-register and pay the applicable fee again.

The National Benchmark Tests are a significant component of the UCT admissions process for a substantial number of applicants. By familiarising yourself with who needs to write the tests, understanding their structure, noting the critical deadlines, and being aware of the associated costs, you can approach your NBTs with greater confidence and preparedness.

Always consult the specific requirements for your desired programme of study and plan your NBT writing well in advance. We wish you the best of luck with your UCT application!
