How to calculate your points (APS) at TUT?

To apply for the above mentioned courses at TUT, you need to meet the minimum entry requirements. One of the entry requirements is your APS, which is calculated based on your matric results or equivalent qualification. Your APS is the total sum of your achievement levels (or percentages) for six subjects, excluding Life Orientation. Each achievement level (or percentage) has a corresponding point value, as shown in the table below:

| Level         | Percentage | Point Value|
|---------------- |------------     |-------------      |
| 7                 | 80-100       | 7                   |
| 6                 | 70-79         | 6                    |
| 5                 | 60-69         | 5                    |
| 4                 | 50-59         | 4                    |
| 3                 | 40-49         | 3                    |
| 2                 | 30-39         | 2                    |
| 1                 | 0-29           | 1                    |

For example, if your matric results are as follows:

| Subject                | Percentage | Point Value|
|------------------       |------------        |-------------     |
| English HL          | 75                 | 6                  |
| Afrikaans FAL     | 65                 | 5                 |
| Mathematics      | 55                 | 4                 |
| Physical Science | 60                 | 3                |
| Geography          | 50                 | 4                |
| History                 | 45                 | 3               |

Your APS would be:

6 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 25

Some courses may have specific subject requirements or additional selection criteria, such as tests or interviews. You can check the admission requirements for each course on the TUT prospectus, Click here to download TUT 2025 Prospectus.

Remember that meeting the minimum APS requirement does not guarantee admission to the course of your choice because admission is subject to availability of space therefore, it is advisable to apply early and have backup options in case you are not accepted. Luckily there are many public universities available in South Africa which have courses that require 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 points (APS).

Yes, TUT accepts 22 APS (points) for admission to some of the courses. However, it is important to note that the minimum admission requirements for each course may vary, so it is always best to check the TUT prospectus for the latest minimum admission requirements.
