What Is NSFAS?
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides financial assistance to qualifying South African students who want to study at public universities or TVET colleges. For Semester 2 of 2025, NSFAS is offering both bursaries and student loans, depending on your household income.
NSFAS Bursary vs NSFAS Loan
NSFAS Bursary (Fully Funded)
To qualify:
- Be a South African citizen or permanent resident
- Combined household income must be R350,000 or less per year
- If living with a disability: income cap is R600,000 per year
What it covers:
- Registration fees
- Tuition fees
- Learning materials
- Living allowance
- Personal care allowance
- Transport or accommodation
NSFAS Student Loan
To qualify:
- Be a South African citizen or permanent resident
- Combined household income must be between R350,001 and R600,000 per year
What it covers:
- Learning materials
- Accommodation or transport
Note: Living and personal allowances are not covered under the loan.
How to Apply
Applying is quick and easy:

- Create your myNSFAS account
- Complete your application with all required information
- Upload supporting documents and submit
Required Supporting Documents
Depending on your personal circumstances, you may need the following:
- Certified copy of your ID or birth certificate
- Proof of income (parents/guardians/spouse)
- Consent form (download from NSFAS website)
- Declaration form (for applicants under 35)
- Disability Annexure (with medical report) – if applicable
- Orphan/Vulnerable Child Declaration – if under 18 and in care
Make sure your documents are clear and correctly labelled before uploading.
Who Should Not Apply?
You cannot apply for NSFAS funding if you:
- Are fully funded by another bursary (100%)
- Want to study for a second undergraduate or certificate qualification
- Are registered at a private institution
- Are applying for a course not approved by DHET or SAQA
